CONSTRUCTION OF 30 COMMUNAL LATRINES FOR RURAL VILLAGES,67 COMMUNAL LATRINES FOR IDPs AND 17 DISABILITY FRIENDLY LATRINES IN WAJID DISTRICT BAKOOL REGION

Under the project titled “Provision of Life-Saving and Sustainable WASH Services for Climate Shock-A ected Communities in Wajid District, Bakool Region,” Mustaqbal Development and Relief Organization (MUDRO), with generous funding from the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF), successfully completed the construction of 114 sanitation facilities in Wajid District, Bakool Region. The completed works include:

  • 30 communal latrines constructed in rural villages,
  • 67 communal latrines built across IDP settlements, and
  • 17 disability-friendly latrines designed to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for persons with disabilities.

All facilities were constructed in full compliance with WASH Cluster standards, emphasizing safety, privacy, gender sensitivity, and accessibility. Each latrine block was equipped with handwashing stations to reinforce hygiene practices and prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. The activity was implemented in close collaboration with district authorities, camp leaders, and the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, ensuring community participation in every stage — from site selection and construction monitoring to post-completion handover.

The initiative was highly successful, significantly improving sanitation coverage for the communities in both IDP camps and rural villages. Beneficiaries expressed deep satisfaction with the improved facilities, noting enhanced cleanliness, dignity, and privacy. Communities also reported a noticeable reduction in open defecation and a stronger commitment to maintaining hygiene standards. In parallel, trained hygiene promoters conducted awareness sessions on safe latrine use, handwashing, and environmental cleanliness, further reinforcing the sustainability of the intervention.

MUDRO extends its sincere appreciation to the Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) for their continued support and partnership. This achievement marks a major milestone in promoting safe sanitation and inclusive WASH services for climate-a ected and displaced communities in Bakool Region.
